Book Stores
Book stores, today an important part of life for any keen reader, could be in danger of being outcompeted by the growing business in e-books. Currently, book stores serve as the middle men between publishers and the public. They make their money by selling the books for more than they originally cost but dwindling business could leave them unable to meet their overheads. The business relies on selling in bulk and making a small profit on each book sold. The introduction of e-books poses a serious threat to the business. The e-books are more convenient as they can be purchased directly from anywhere as long as you have a connection to the internet. Another advantage is that many books can be stored on one device. I think that e-books aren’t going anywhere and will in fact keep growing. There is evidence for this and ‘Amazon.com’ now sells more e-books than conventional books. I think that the bookstore business will survive, but only if they adapt. Perhaps they could explore internet sites and physical shops in an effort to make the best of both world or they could try and deliver books as this would help to counter the availability of the e-books. I think that a very important deciding factor will be the cost. At present, e-books are more expensive than regular books but theoretically there is no reason why they should be. If the price of e-books falls as I think it will, then maybe book stores will have to cut prices as well. So I think that bookstores will survive, but not as we know them. They will have to adapt to have a chance at competing against e-books. by Ashpen and Vishnu
